BAISAKHI 2020
Vaisakhi is celebrated among Sikhs and Hindus. It is
a spring harvest fest which is celebrated on 13th or 14th
of every April. Historical significance of this day is quite interesting. On this day famous Khalsa Panth is established by 10th
Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh.

History
of Baisakhi- Also called Vaisakh,
Baisakh.
According to ancient
story, Guru Gobind Singh challenged
Sikhs who was ready to give his life. In a crowd of thousand people only five
came forward for this act. Instead of killing those volunteers, baptize them
with “Amrit” and formed a
five-member group named as “Khalsa”.
These five men who represent the “Khalsa”
were known as the five keys signifying Kesh
(Hair), Kangha (comb), Kara (steel ring), Kirpan (sword) and Katchera
(underwear).
On this significant
day, the spraying of nectar of “Amrit”
is a common practice during the ceremonial baptize of Sikhs. Except this day people also marks the Ripening of Rabi crop and celebrated with happiness
among the people of Punjab.
In Hinduism, Vasakhi is observed as the New Year’s Day and celebrated
fruitfully in some states of India.
How Festival is celebrated in India-
Sikhs - All Gurudwaras are decorated with lights,
colors. Sikhs organize “Nagar Kirtan”,
which lead by five Khalsa. Sikhs singing hymns from Sikhi texts. Bigger marches
keep a copy of “Guru Granth Sahib”
as a show of respect. On this occasion many cultural events are organized in
various states. Folk dance or Bhangra specially a harvest fest dance, is quite
common in cultural events. People gathering and local fairs are the integral
part of Punjabi culture.
Hindus celebrated the day as a New Years
beginning. People take a dip in holy Ganga and other holy rivers on starting of
this day. They dressed up in traditional apparel, including visiting to friends
and relative’s houses are most common. It is also considered as to start new
venture on this day. Vasakhi festival is celebrated in all states with
different names but its main symbol is prosperity for all is same.
Vaisakhi 2020-
People sing, dance
and wear brand new clothes on this day to celebrate festival with full mood. They
enjoy watching Nagar Kirtans that
shall take place during this season. Men and women both dance, Men perform Bhangra whereas women perform the Gidda to celebrate the festival of Vaisakhi.
People prepare and
share different sweets among themselves on this day. Sikhs who carry processions is in great mood and this
makes them happy. Festival is widely celebrated in Punjab, Haryana and northern
states of India.
People (Sikhs) wakeup early in the morning,
take a bath, wear new clothes then visit to the nearest Gurudwara and submit prayers. Once prayers are submitted, Kada Prasad is distributed to everyone
present at Gurudwara. Then Langar is served by volunteers. Many events conducted by schools on this day.
Real beauty of Vasakhi is seen at Gurudwaras, as they are fully decorated
and Kirtans are the main attraction
for people. Same celebrations are expected in upcoming Vaisakhi 2020.
Rituals-
Sikhs participate in
common prayer that shall held at all Gurudwaras.
The Guru Granth Sahib shall be
bathed in milk. Prasad is
distributed to attendees, then Granth
sahib taken out parades by Sikhs. These are some common rituals of
Vaisakhi. The Kirpan (Sword); The Kesh (uncut hair); The Kara (steel ring); The Kangha (Comb) and The Katchbera are symbols of festival
Vaisakhi.
Public life on this Festival-
This festival is
very precious for Sikhs. As according to Nanakshahi
calendar it is the celebration of ‘New
Year’. On Vaisakhi, all schools and colleges shall remain closed.
Commercial outlet that are owned by Sikhs, their operating hours are also
reduced. There is no any effect on
transport.

celebrates Vaisakhi with full mood. One can consider this place as people here
also organizes different parties those are open for all. People here also
visited Gurudwaras in the morning
and submit their prayers.
Sikhs outside India
also celebrate this festival with grandeur. Such as in Pakistan, there is Birth place of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru ji’s birth place also attract pilgrims from
India and all over the world. As Baisakhi observed in western Punjab and there are
attractive places are situated such as Punja
Sahib in Hasan Abdal, other Gurudwara in Nankana Sahib in Lahore.
